750 Million People

around the world suffer from vision loss due to uncorrected refractive errors.

We want to change that.

We are a team of engineers, scientists, and problem solvers working to address the global vision crisis. Over 750 million people worldwide suffer from uncorrected refractive errors which can result in impaired vision, difficulties learning, working and functioning even blindness. This equate to hundreds of billions of dollars in lost annual global productivity. We believe that innovation can drive more accessible vision care for everyone. In February of 2015, we launched the world’s first-smartphone based wavefront autorefractor, SVOne, to combat this global challenge. To date, the SVOne is used in over 300 eye clinics across the United States and in 23 countries. Today, the team continues to create industry-changing technology to reinvent the future of vision care.

Leadership Team

John Doskoczynski

John brings over thirty years of experience in manufacturing and product development to Smart Vision Labs. Whether it’s product packaging, CAD design, 3-D printing, or production-ready machined parts, John takes a thoughtful approach to design for manufacturability. He has a State Journeymanship in Tool and Moldmaking along with studies in Material Science and Machine Tool Technology. When John is not being challenged with aggressive timelines, he can be found in the woods with his mountain bike or looking for his golf ball.

Lee Kuczewsi
Lee Kuczewski

Lee Kuczewski is an ABO certified and licensed optician (MA & RI) and eyewear designer, with 15 years of optical industry expertise. He joins Smart Vision Labs after co-founding two ophthalmic related companies in custom frame manufacturing and smart eyewear consulting. He brings experience in optical retail operations, product development, and IP strategy. His work can found on celebrity clients and is also featured in the book “Digital Handmade: Craftsmanship and the New Industrial Revolution” published by Thames & Hudson. In his free time, he enjoys running, audiobooks, and raising awareness for mental health issues.

Kaccie Li, PhD

Kaccie grew up in Shelton, WA but left town to pick up a couple degrees from Rochester and a PhD from Berkeley. Dr. Li joined Smart Vision Labs in April 2015 as Principal Scientist after stints at Abbott Medical Optics and Brien Holden Vision, and as of early 2017 he became the company’s first Chief Scientist. He brings deep knowledge in wavefront estimation/control and low-cost optics manufacturing. More importantly, he’s one of the few Asian-American Dutch speakers in the world and can (almost) snatch a 32-kg kettlebell.

Jen Mele
Jennifer Mele

Jennifer joined Smart Vision Labs as Director of Business Development with 7 years of sales experience in wholesale and SaaS. Jennifer holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Business from Villanova University and an MBA from New York University. In her spare time you can find her running on the West Side Highway or planning a last minute trip.

Yaopeng Zhou, PhD

Dr. Yaopeng Zhou is the co-founder and CEO of Smart Vision Labs. Yaopeng invented smartphone-based autorefraction technology to measure refractive errors by taking a picture of the eye. Before co-founding Smart Vision Labs, Yaopeng worked at GE Healthcare and Abbott Labs as an optical engineer. Yaopeng earned his Ph.D from Boston University, and conducted research on retinal imaging and stem cell imaging at Schepens Eye Research Institute and Wellman Center for Photomedicine.
